What Is Landscape Lighting? A Homeowner's Primer
By the JHL Landscape Lighting design team · Updated 2026-06
Landscape lighting is the practice of illuminating the outside of your home and grounds after the sun goes down. Done well, it is less about fixtures and more about a scene: a graceful tree glowing from below, a stone facade washed in warm light, a path that quietly shows you the way to the door. The goal is to extend the beauty and usefulness of your property into the evening hours, when most people are actually home to enjoy it.
It is easy to confuse landscape lighting with simply mounting a few brighter bulbs on the house. Real landscape lighting is a designed system, planned around your specific architecture and plantings, with hidden fixtures and a clear sense of what should draw the eye and what should fade into shadow. The difference between the two is the difference between a porch light and a property that looks composed after dark.
How a system works
Nearly all modern residential landscape lighting runs on a low-voltage system. A transformer mounted near an outdoor outlet steps household 120-volt power down to a safe 12 volts. From there, buried cable carries that current to fixtures positioned throughout the yard. Because the voltage is low, the system is safe to work around and far easier to adjust season to season as plantings grow and change.
The fixtures themselves do the visible work. Uplights sit at the base of trees and walls to send light upward. Path lights cast soft pools along walkways. Downlights mounted in trees mimic moonlight filtering through the canopy. Each type has a job, and a thoughtful design uses several together rather than scattering identical lights around the perimeter.
Why homeowners invest in it
There are three reasons people light their landscapes: beauty, safety, and security. Beauty is the headline. A dark house disappears at night, while a lit one looks intentional and cared for. Safety comes from illuminating steps, grade changes, and walkways so guests move confidently. Security follows naturally, because a well-lit property is far less inviting to anyone who would rather not be seen.
Modern LED systems make all of this efficient. A full design might draw less power than a couple of old incandescent bulbs, run for years without attention, and burn a warm, flattering color that makes brick, stone, and foliage look their best.
What it typically costs
Professional landscape lighting is a custom product, so pricing depends on the size of your property and the look you want. A focused path or accent project typically runs a few thousand dollars, while a full design-and-install across a larger Main Line property can range from $3,000 to $15,000. The investment buys professional-grade brass fixtures, proper wiring, and a design tuned to your specific architecture rather than a kit of look-alike lights.
