How We Design

Our Standards

Every property we light follows the same approach: design the scene first, install it low-voltage with warm 2700K LED and hidden wiring, then aim every fixture with you on a night walk-through. Scene over fixture, architecture-first — no corner-cutting.

Our 7-Step Design & Build Process

Every JHL system goes through the same process — from the first dusk site visit to the final night walk-through. No steps skipped, no surprises.

01

Free On-Site Design Consultation

We come to your property and walk it with you — at dusk when we can. We study the architecture, the trees, the grade, and the way you actually use the space. Before any money changes hands, we know what scene we want to design. No showroom, no salesperson — the person who shows up is the person who designs your lighting.

02

Scene-First Lighting Design

We design the scene before we pick a single fixture. Layers of light — uplight, moonlight, path, grazing, accent — chosen to reveal depth, texture, and focal points. We map fixture locations, beam angles, and color temperature so the finished property reads as one composed image after dark, not a scatter of bright points.

03

Detailed Written Quote

You receive a full line-item quote: fixtures by type, transformer sizing, wire runs, controls, and labor. No vague ranges, no "call for pricing." You know exactly what you are paying for, and what the finished scene will include, before you sign anything.

04

Low-Voltage Installation

We install professional-grade brass and composite fixtures on a low-voltage 12-volt system. Wiring is buried and hidden, transformers are sized with headroom for future zones, and every connection is made to last in the weather. Clean work, no visible cable, no shortcuts.

05

Warm 2700K LED Throughout

We use warm 2700K LED lamps that hold a true halogen-warm color, sip power, and last for years. The light feels natural and inviting — never the cold blue-white of cheap fixtures. Consistent color temperature across the whole property keeps the scene cohesive.

06

Night Walk-Through

Every JHL system gets a night walk-through. We meet you after dark, on your property, and aim every fixture with you — adjusting beam spread, brightness, and angle until the scene is exactly right. We program your timer, photocell, or smart controls during the walk. We do not call it finished until you see it lit.

07

Service & Seasonal Adjustment

Landscape lighting lives outdoors and plants grow. We return to re-aim fixtures as trees fill in, re-lamp as needed, and tune the system season to season. We service systems we installed and systems installed by others — the scene stays right for the long run.

What We Hold Ourselves To

The quality of a lighting scene comes from design, components, and craft. We spec by performance — and we explain every choice before you commit.

Scene-First Design

Layered light, designed before fixtures are chosen

A great scene reveals architecture, depth, and focal points — it is not a row of identical lights. We design the composition first, then specify the fixtures that achieve it. Scene over fixture, always.

Low-Voltage 12-Volt Systems

Transformer-fed 12V, sized with headroom

Low-voltage is the professional residential standard — safer to work around, efficient, and flexible to expand. We size transformers with room to add zones later and plan wire runs so growth is straightforward.

Warm 2700K LED

Consistent 2700K color temperature throughout

Warm 2700K LED holds a true halogen-warm color, lasts for years, and draws a fraction of the power. Consistent color across the property keeps the scene cohesive — no patchwork of cool and warm light.

Professional-Grade Fixtures

Brass and composite fixtures built for the weather

We install professional-grade brass and composite fixtures that survive Pennsylvania seasons. They are serviceable, re-lampable, and built to hold their finish — not throwaway big-box units that fail in a year.

Hidden Wiring & Connections

Buried cable, weatherproof connections

Wiring should never be part of the scene. We bury cable, conceal runs, and make weatherproof connections that hold up outdoors. The only thing you should see at night is the light.

Night Walk-Through & Workmanship

100% Night Walk-Through Guarantee

We aim every fixture with you, after dark, on your property — and back our work with a workmanship guarantee. The scene is not finished until you have seen it lit and it is right.

Our Guarantee

Every JHL system carries our 100% Night Walk-Through Guarantee and a workmanship guarantee. We aim every fixture with you after dark and do not call the job finished until the scene is right.

Our professional-grade brass and composite fixtures and warm 2700K LED lamps are built to last — serviceable and re-lampable, not throwaway. We are here for the long run, season to season.

The guarantee isn't fine print. It's a handshake from the people whose names are on this company.

Common Questions About Our Standards

What does your night walk-through guarantee mean?

After installation we meet you on your property after dark and aim every fixture with you — adjusting beam, brightness, and angle until the scene is right. We do not consider the job finished until you have seen it lit and approved it. That is our 100% Night Walk-Through Guarantee.

Why low-voltage instead of line-voltage lighting?

Low-voltage runs on a 12-volt system stepped down through a transformer — safer to work around, more energy efficient, and far more flexible to adjust and expand than 120V line-voltage. It is the professional standard for residential landscape lighting.

Will the LED light look harsh or blue?

No. We use warm 2700K LED throughout, which holds a true halogen-warm color — inviting and natural, never the cold blue-white of cheap fixtures. Consistent color temperature across the property keeps the whole scene cohesive.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. JHL Landscape Lighting is licensed and insured. Certificates of insurance are available upon request.

Do you service systems you did not install?

Yes. We service, repair, re-lamp, and seasonally adjust landscape lighting systems installed by others as well as our own. If your existing system has dark zones or failing fixtures, we can diagnose it and restore the scene.
