Lumens
The measure of total light output a fixture produces, the true gauge of brightness.
Lumens measure the total amount of visible light a fixture emits, making them the honest gauge of brightness, unlike watts, which only measure power consumed. In landscape lighting, more lumens is not automatically better: a path light needs only a modest output to guide footsteps without glare, while uplighting a tall tree from a distance calls for far more punch to reach the canopy. Matching lumens to the task is central to good design, because over-lighting flattens a scene and creates harsh hot spots, while under-lighting leaves focal points dull. We choose output deliberately for each fixture and layer brightness so the composition has depth, contrast, and a natural, restful feel.
