Uplighting
Aiming fixtures upward from ground level to dramatize trees, walls, and architecture.
Uplighting places a fixture at or below ground level and aims its beam upward to wash a tree, wall, column, or architectural feature with dramatic light. Because the direction is the reverse of natural daylight, it creates instant drama, accentuating texture, height, and form in a way the eye finds striking after dark. It is the most popular technique in landscape lighting and the foundation of most designs, used to graze a stone facade, reveal the branching of a mature tree, or frame an entryway. Beam spread and lumens are chosen to match the size and distance of the target. We layer uplighting with downlighting and accents to build a scene with real depth and balance.
