Wall Washing
Lighting a surface evenly from a distance to bathe it in soft, uniform light.
Wall washing lights a flat surface, such as a facade, fence, or garden wall, with a soft, even layer of light from a fixture set back at a moderate distance. Pulling the source away from the wall and using a wider beam spreads the light smoothly, erasing hot spots and minimizing texture so the surface reads as a calm, uniform backdrop. It is the gentle counterpart to grazing, which deliberately rakes light across a surface to exaggerate texture. Wall washing is ideal for clean stucco, painted walls, or any surface you want to brighten without drama, and it makes an excellent backdrop for silhouetting plants. We use it to add quiet, expansive light that anchors a composition.
